“Well, ye did make a good impression, did not ye?” He took the parchment out of her hands to read it again.

“Tomorrow. She wishes to see me tomorrow,” Kit said as she paced up and down the kitchen. “There is not long left before they make their attempt on Elizabeth’s life.”

“Just one week,” Iomhar confirmed.

“Tomorrow will have to do then,” Kit sighed, as Iomhar’s head darted up.

“Ye are not going.”

“I beg your pardon?” Kit stopped in her pacing and turned back to face him. “Why am I not going?”

“Because ye cannot.”

“Because you say so?” Kit laughed at the idea. “I will not do anything just because you tell me to do it, Iomhar.”

He rolled his eyes at her words and placed the letter flat on the kitchen table, leaning over it so that the table was the only thing separating them.

“Do ye not remember our conversation last night about how dangerous Lady Ruskin could be?”

“I remember it very well,” she agreed.

“Then ye understand why ye cannot take this any further. Ye could be walking into a trap.”

“A trap?” Kit leaned across the table too and snatched the parchment from under his hand. “Read the letter again. If I am not mistaken, she likes me very much indeed and is clearly trying to scout out what my opinion is on the monarchy. If I can make her trust me, she could tell me of her plot.”

“If…” Iomhar stressed the word, leaning on the table with both of his hands. “I told ye last night, I will not be so cavalier with your life as Walsingham is.” The words made Kit flinch in surprise. “This is being cavalier. I will not let ye go.”

“I neither seek your permission, nor your blessing. If I want to go, then that is my decision,” she declared, matching his stance as she leaned on the table too, with her hands down on the surface and the letter discarded between them. “You cannot change my mind.”

Iomhar was breathing deeply, his cheeks above his beard reddening with the extent of his anger. Kit merely smiled back at him, knowing he couldn’t argue with her any further.

“Am I interrupting something, Kitty?” Doris’s voice from the doorway disturbed her.

Kit stood straight from the table, turning to face the housekeeper. “Not at all, Doris. Iomhar and I were just having a difference of opinion,” Kit said, still smiling.

“I hear from the master you two have a lot of those,” Doris chuckled as she walked into the room. “Mr Blackwood, the master wants to see you as you are here.”

Kit froze and looked back to Doris.

“Lady Sidney is allowing it?” she asked.

“It was her father’s order, she cannot disobey it,” Doris explained with a shrug.

As Iomhar moved toward the doorway, Kit went to follow, but Doris placed a hand on her arm. “He just wished to see Mr Blackwood, Kitty.”

Kit pressed her lips together, tempted to argue though she knew it would do little good. She turned and watched Iomhar as he left the kitchen, his face just as sombre and disquieted as it had been in their argument.
